Assistant professor of early modern history at the Department of Culture and Global Studies, Aalborg University.
Johan Heinsen studies colonial and maritime history. Currently he is working on a FKK-funded project entitled Empire of Dissonances about subaltern networks in the beginnings of Danish colonialism in the Caribbean in the second half of the 17th century. The project involves microhistorical research into the lives of convicts shipped from Copenhagen’s naval dockyard prison Trunken and Børnehuset on Christianhavn. The project also involves the study of runaways, smugglers and pirates in the Danish Caribbean. In his PhD, Heinsen studied piracy and the social history of its culture of crime. He has also written extensively on the dynamics of mutiny at sea.
