The Peasant and the Law – Conflicts in the Countryside 1750-1850

The aim of the project is to identify the norms and attitudes of the rural population by analyzing (a) which conflicts the peasants had with the law and the public authorities and (b) how these conflicts were described in the source material.

In order to get as close as possible to the cases and the actors, this is a micro history project. The basis is the population of three neighbouring parishes in Jutland – Junget, Torum and Selde – from the beginning of the 18th century to the end of the 19th. This population is already registered in my “Salling-database” which contains an extended family reconstitution and links to various sources on the individual level. The database has been successfully used for my earlier projects.

The database and the describing character of the historical legal sources together present an opportunity of fruitfully combining quantitative and qualitative research methods – thus allowing us to see both the wood and the trees.

I expect the project to begin in 2015 and end in 2017.
